  • I’ve long looked for a succinct definition of the pejorative sense of the word. Wikipedia delivers:

    Insincere form of performative activism

Some leftists, such as writer Daniel Bernabé and philosopher Susan Neiman, criticize wokeness as a form of tribalism which divides the working class and distracts from the universalist class struggle

Though to be fair, tribalism is really hard to escape. Everyone seems to have a tribe.

I personally don’t identify with any of the large social movements taking place right now, on the right or the left. I do have a group of similar, like-minded friends. Now it seems like they’re my tribe.

  • Based on what the guy said in the video it sounds like his driveway snow melter is resistive electric. That means the coefficient of performance is 1.0: you get 1 watt of heat in the driveway for every watt of electricity you consume.

We already consider that to be unacceptable for household heating. With a modern heat pump you can achieve a COP above 4.0, even when ambient temperatures are below freezing. So why not have a heat pump driving refrigerant lines under the driveway surface? With COP 4.0 you’re 4 times the efficiency of electric resistive heating which means your costs are 1/4:

    $26.33/4=$6.58

Now that is a lot more reasonable!

  • The original comment was “insects are not meat.” That’s it! That’s the whole claim you’re trying to defend. It’s like saying “chickens are not meat.” So they’re vegetables then?! It’s a ridiculous claim!

There are different senses (or uses) of the word meat. One sense, the narrowest one which butchers use when they talk about separating whole muscle from skin, bones, and other tissues, is the one which you are insisting is the only true definition. Another sense, the broader dietary one, classifies any product or byproduct from an animal as meat, including the whole unprocessed carcass.

Since the original claim was simply the unqualified statement “insects are not meat”, I am claiming the freedom to use the broader dietary sense of the word to show how ridiculous that statement is. You, by your insistence on the narrower sense of the word, are the one being pedantic.

  • If I buy a whole chicken at the grocery store, I buy it in the meat section. No one would say “you’re buying a whole chicken, therefore you’re not buying meat.”

With lobster you can extract the meat and eat it. You can also boil the empty shell to make a lobster stock as a base for a seafood soup or a pan sauce. Just as with chicken you don’t eat the bones but you can boil them to make stocks for soup or pan sauces. They’re still classified as meat and the products you make from them are considered meat products.

  • Right now the biggest difference between the left and right is structural.

The right is rushing towards the middle of their group. They insist that everyone toe the line on MAGA orthodoxy. Anyone outside of that (even more traditional conservatives) is driven out into the cold.

The left is casting as wide a net as possible. They’re trying to include as many groups as they can and basically grabbing up anyone who feels alienated by the right. There is no orthodoxy besides “stop the right at all costs.”

This is a problem for the left if they’re hoping to replicate Joe Rogan. There’s no orthodoxy to appeal to, no centre of gravity to rally around.
